How Connie Released Her Work of Art
One thing I teach about at length in my upcoming book, Ask Think Imagine, is that our work of art is just that … work. There are times when we are serving God with our “art” and then we simply get tired. Uninspired. Worn out. Any artist knows this all too well. When the muse strikes and the endorphins hit, we are ecstatic about what could be! We can imagine it in our mind’s eye. No one can tell us any different. We are PUMPED about our idea. But then comes week 4, week 6, month 5… When the initial inspiration is gone, what do we do? What happens then? What if we realized that just like artists have to “put in the work” to complete their work of art, we too need to realize that we are responsible for our work of art that serves the world and points people to Jesus.
Responsible. What a terrible word, right? Can we just collectively decide now to make that word the “R” word, an official curse word? Profanity! I say!
No one wants to be “responsible.” We want to be … fun. In fact, in every marriage, there’s the “responsible one” (usually Mom… happy Mother’s day) and then there’s the “fun one” (usually Dad) Well what about taking that concept of responsibility and thinking of it through the lens of our creative work?
I don’t know about you but I want to create when I want to create. I want to create a song or write a sermon or something “new” when I feel inspired. But I gotta tell ya… more often than not, I’m just putting in the work. Now that’s not to say that A. God’s Spirit isn’t working within in thru my discipline. or that B. God’s Spirit isn’t inspiring me in the moment. I pray for God’s Spirit to inspire me EVERY TIME I go to create something new. However, I have to be honest and tell you that there are many days where it’s just plain “work” and a commitment to faithfulness for me to do the work.
So what has God placed in your heart? What are you responsible to bring about? What “work of art” could bring the beauty of Jesus into a broken world that is sitting idle and unmade within the imagination of your heart?
