Now That's Grace
Imagine you’re in a courtroom being held accountable for your crimes. Imagine hearing the sound of the gavel strike and the bailiff bringing order in the court. Imagine YOU are the criminal, charged with crimes against humanity. You’re scared for your life. You were on the run, but now you’re caught, shackled hands, unable to escape your punishment ... or your guilt. The Judge describes your crimes. Your head drops even lower in shame. But then, to your surprise, the Judge does something remarkable. He steps down and offers to not only pardon you but also take your place.
That, my friend, is grace. What’s more, is that the Judge also informs you and all who are present that you are to live in His house and be considered by all people justified in every way - totally forgiven and not just forgiven but honored as a family member of the judge! In another turn of events, the Judge’s dad wants to adopt you into his family and give you an inheritance more valuable than you can comprehend. That’s grace. That’s what Jesus has done for us.
Christmas is about remembering not just how Jesus came but why Jesus came. Jesus humbled Himself “not considering Himself equal with God” but humbled Himself to be born a baby. He grew up, did what the Holy Spirit nudged Him to do in order to do the right thing. He gave His life on a cross, rose from the grave three days later. Jesus is the Righteous Judge who we will all stand before one day. This Righteous Judge took our place when we deserved terrible punishment. His Father adopted us! This is the gift of grace - the gift of Christmas. WOW!
